Lesley M. Mehalick, J.D., LL.M.

Lesley M. Mehalick, J.D., LL.M. joined McAndrews Law Offices as an associate attorney in March of 2006. Her practice is primarily focused in the areas of estate planning, estate administration, special needs and disability planning, special needs trusts, and tax planning. Ms. Mehalick received both a Masters of Laws (LL.M.) in taxation and an Estate Planning Certificate from the Graduate Tax Program at the Villanova University School of Law.

Ms. Mehalick’s work in special needs and disability planning includes working with families to develop a plan that will best serve the needs of the disabled individual as well as his or her family. These efforts include advising regarding public benefits, preparing an estate plan that works in conjunction with a Third-Party Funded Special Needs Trust, guardianships, and Self-Funded (or OBRA-93) Special Needs Trusts that hold a disabled beneficiary’s own assets. Her work in estate planning includes preparation of Wills, Trusts, Powers of Attorney, Advanced Medical Directives, and she is experienced in techniques designed to minimize or eliminate Federal Estate Tax implications including Wills with Credit Shelter and/or Disclaimer Trusts, Marital Trusts, Grantor Trusts, gifting techniques, and Irrevocable Life Insurance Trusts. She is a frequent lecturer to both attorneys and families on these topics.

Ms. Mehalick is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University, where she earned a multiple major in Political Science and Spanish, and a minor in International Studies. She received her J.D. from the George Washington University Law School, where she served as the Executive Articles Editor on the American Intellectual Property Law Association Quarterly Journal and was a student attorney in the Domestic Violence Litigation Clinic. During the year 2001-2002, Ms. Mehalick was the judicial law clerk for the Honorable Stanley P. Klein, Judge of the Fairfax County Circuit Court in Fairfax County, Virginia. From 2002 through 2006, Ms. Mehalick was an associate at the firm of Walton & Adams, P.C., in Reston, Virginia, where she engaged in a general practice with an emphasis in the areas of commercial litigation, domestic relations, eminent domain, and estate litigation. She has litigated suits in both Virginia and Maryland.
